But she was pretty shocked that there is no conclusion to the story YET haha. I finished it up with my wife and it was her first time watching it and she absolutely adored it too.

I don’t really think doom style explosive shotguns really make sense for the rest of the vibe the world is going for. People say the guns feel shit but I personally think they feel fine and not overbearing. I love this shit the way it drip feeds information and a lot is open to interpretation. It’s the small attention to detail that I just fucking LOVE.Īlso the mystery in the story (which of course sucks still hasn’t been wrapped up) but everything leaves you asking more questions.

The music is subtle and kicks in at perfect times it feels so dynamic. They are so damn unique and loveable even the crazy priest I actually love ravenholm and how the game vibe totally changes into kind of survival horror. You’re there, shit has happened and you know it’s fucking bad. Not shoved in my face and not “this is why the world sucks” constant speeches. I love atmosphere in my games and I love it done subtle. But for my personal taste this game.this fucking gameįirstly the atmosphere is fucking incredible. Half-Life 2 has always been better than its predecessor and has aged far more gracefully (which speaks to the first point). Water Hazard and Highway 17 are some of the very best chapters in the game and I've felt that way since 2004, fuck the haters. The opening chapters are the best parts of the game, as you build Gordon's arsenal. Love the episodes too, but haven't played through them in years.ĮDIT - And 3 of my other semi-controversial, non standard opinions towards Half-Life 2: Though this is typically where I tend to put a lot of playthroughs down, cause I definitely do think the last quarter of the game or so is a little less fun/interesting honestly. I'd played up to Nova Prospekt about a year ago. They aren't heavy, weighty, or meaty (outside of the magnum, smg nades, the double barrel shotgun, pulse rifle orbs and launching heavy stuff with the gravity gun that is) but more nimble, precise, and crisp in how they feel to aim and shoot. Personally, I've always felt that they felt very crisp, punchy, and snappy. I've never really got the complaints aimed towards the firearms. The other FPS single player games that are close for me are DOOM Eternal, Titanfall 2, and Halo 3 that's probably my FPS campaign top 4.Īgreed about the atmosphere and the guns. I agree OP, Half-Life 2 is definitely up there for me if not #1. (I do still have an affinity for the dynamic super hard shadows of Doom 3 of course) For me it's a laugh comparing HL2 to Doom 3 visually today, but the wars about it back then were intense. And the characters are still pretty convincing, especially their facial animations. Some of the things to look forward to are improved AI, new weapons, and dismemberment mechanics. Well, now they have something to show and are planning on releasing it next year.

Low res textures aside, it's incredibly sharp looking at modern resolutions. Gunship Mark II promised us a really cool Half-Life 2 mod over 2 years ago and they've had nothing to show for it during that time. Alright, Dark Messiah of Might and Magic was pretty good too, but that's no surprise given the engine.Įdit: And it also still looks good.

Even titles made a decade later didn't seem to use physics in a meaningful way in their campaigns and it seems like most games have become more static with time. I really felt like I was seeing the future of interactivity in the genre. Seeing combine ragdoll and fly 30 feet away from a rocket impact still feels good. Ravenholm is a physics sandbox that still feels refreshing after playing through more modern FPS games. It feels good to pick up a barrel and throw it. I have yet to play through episode two but from what I have read it runs perfectly. One thing that shocks me is that 16 years on, Half-Life 2 is like the only FPS campaign where object physics compliments the gameplay well. This I have heard will be fixed in the next patch. For episode 1, I was able to play through most of it before I found myself unable to proceed due to an event failing to trigger (the part at the end where you have to escort the civilians to the train). In my playthrough of Half-Life 2 with the mod enabled, I experienced two crashes that were caused by reloading a save during one of the holdout sections (the one where you defend Alyx in the plaza). You can now properly aim down the sight with the crossbow, revolver and standard pistol. The TAU cannon is now available for you to use and can be dismounted from the Jeep (I believe the gluon gun is going to be added into the game at some point). They will throw grenades more frequently and they now use the underbarrel grenade launcher on the standard smg. There are tons of new graphical effects and animations (all of which, can be enabled or disabled if you don’t like them) and the enemy AI has been tweaked.
